What hose size and thread does a dehumidifier drain port use?

Short answer

There is no single hose size or thread across dehumidifiers. GE says its drain connection takes a standard garden hose, Frigidaire calls for a garden hose 1/2 inch or larger, Midea says a standard size drain hose, AEOCKY includes a 5/16 inch inner diameter hose with a garden hose adapter, and Danby says most units have a hose connection. Match the maker's wording for your model and keep the run below the port.

What a drain port does

A drain port is the fitting where water leaves the unit instead of filling the bucket. On a gravity setup, water falls from the port through a hose to a floor drain, sink, or sump. On a pump model, a separate pump hose carries water upward or sideways to a drain. GE's draining-options page describes both paths and notes that the bucket must stay in place for the unit to operate, even when a hose is connected.

The port is not a universal connector. Each maker publishes its own wording, and that wording is the safest guide. For the broader setup sequence, see continuous drain setup basics.

Hose size: what makers publish

Frigidaire is explicit about diameter: its not-draining page says to use a large diameter garden hose 1/2 inch or larger, or a special purpose dehumidifier hose, and warns that small diameter hoses clog easily. AEOCKY publishes a different figure: the included hose has a 5/16 inch inner diameter, and a garden hose adapter is included. GE and Midea use broader language. GE says the drain connection can be connected to a standard garden hose, and Midea says the unit accepts a standard size drain hose. Danby says most dehumidifiers have a hose connection and points owners to the model manual.

Those differences are why a hose that fits one brand may not fit another. For help reading this kind of claim, see reading brand spec sheets.

Thread and connection details

Thread is the part of the connection that holds the hose nut onto the drain nozzle. The cited pages do not publish a thread pitch or a thread count. They publish compatibility instead: GE says to thread a standard garden hose onto the drain nozzle, and its hose-problems page says a rubber washer should sit in the end of the garden hose. A loose connection can be gently tightened with pliers, according to GE. Frigidaire's page adds a routing rule: the hose should sit below the connection on the unit, lie flat, and stay as straight as possible with no kinks.

If the maker does not state a thread size, do not guess one from a photo. Use the hose type the maker names, and check the washer and the hose end before blaming the port. GE also says to avoid an old or damaged garden hose and to cut off excess hose so the run moves in a straight line to the drain. For a flow problem, see why a gravity drain line stops flowing.

Gravity hose vs pump hose

A gravity hose relies on the port sitting above the drain end. GE says the garden hose should rest flat on the floor and be trimmed as short as the setup allows. Midea says the hose should never be higher than the drain point on the unit because the unit uses gravity to feed water down the hose. AEOCKY gives the same rule: the drainage end should not be submerged in water and should sit lower than the water tank.

A pump model uses a different hose. GE says drain pump models include a 16 foot long pump drain hose and that the pump can move water up to 16 vertical feet. The same page says not to use a longer length of tubing than the 16 foot hose provided. Midea says pump units use a small clear hose attached to a small drain connector near the bottom of the unit, and that the drain pump filter must stay attached or the pump will not work properly. For the choice between the two paths, see built-in pump or gravity drain.

Routing and cleaning rules

Frigidaire says small particles of dust collect in the water a dehumidifier produces, and that this can form sludge and algae that block the hose. Its page recommends flushing the hose periodically with clean water. GE's hose-problems page says to clean the drain and hose with a baby bottle brush or pipe cleaner and to route the hose downward so less material accumulates. GE also says a hose pushed too far into a standpipe can sit in water and stop draining, so pull it out until the outlet is above the water line.

A blocked hose can look like a full bucket. Frigidaire notes that a clogged hose can send water back into the bucket, which may turn on the full bucket light. For routing choices, see ways to route a drain hose. If water appears around the unit, see water pooling around the dehumidifier.

Matching the hose to your model

Start with the maker's own wording for your model, from its owner's manual or support page, and buy a hose to that description rather than to a photo. The table above keeps each published detail with the brand that gave it; none of those details carries over to another brand, and a model the page does not cover may differ.

Do not mix a pump hose rule with a gravity hose rule. GE says the drain pump will not run unless the bucket is seated, and that it only starts once the bucket has filled. Midea says to remove the bucket and check that the drain pump filter is still attached. Those are pump-specific steps, not gravity-drain steps. For a pump-equipped unit, see best dehumidifiers with pump.

Which to choose

If youLook for
If you own a GE model and want gravity drainageUse a standard garden hose with a rubber washer in the hose end, and keep the run flat and short.
If you own a Frigidaire modelUse a garden hose 1/2 inch or larger or a special purpose dehumidifier hose, and keep the hose below the connection.
If you own a Midea pump modelUse the small clear hose at the lower drain connector and confirm the drain pump filter is attached.
If you own an AEOCKY modelUse the included 5/16 inch inner diameter hose or the garden hose adapter, and keep the outlet lower than the tank.
If the hose stops flowingCheck for a kink, a submerged outlet, or debris, then see why a drain hose can air lock.

Questions people ask

Is the drain thread the same on every dehumidifier?

No. The cited maker pages do not publish a thread pitch or a thread count. They name a hose type or an inner diameter instead, and those names differ by brand, as the table above shows. Use the maker's wording for your model.

Can a smaller hose clog more easily?

Frigidaire warns that small diameter hoses clog easily and asks for a garden hose 1/2 inch or larger or a special purpose dehumidifier hose. That warning is Frigidaire's, so apply it to Frigidaire models rather than to every brand.

Does a pump model use the same hose as a gravity model?

No. GE says drain pump models include a separate 16 foot pump hose and that the pump can move water up to 16 vertical feet. Midea says pump units use a small clear hose at a lower drain connector. A gravity hose relies on the outlet sitting lower than the port.

Why does the full bucket light come on with a hose attached?

Frigidaire says a blocked hose can push water back into the bucket and trigger the full bucket light. GE says a loose or faulty connection can let water leak into the bucket while some still runs out through the hose. Check the connection and the hose run.

Where is the garden hose adapter on an AEOCKY unit?

AEOCKY says the garden hose adapter is located inside the water tank. The same page says the included hose has a 5/16 inch inner diameter and that the drainage end should sit lower than the water tank.

Do most dehumidifiers accept a drain hose?

Danby says most dehumidifiers have a hose connection for continuous drainage and directs owners to the model manual for instructions. That is Danby's wording for its own units, not a count across all brands.
